IKEA LED lamp gets hacked for night light duty

IKEA manufactures a number of different lamps, including useful motion-sensitive models, which can click when you walk past. [Andrew Menadue] Tested as a night light, but it was too bright for the task. It also comes on during the daytime when it is not needed which wastes its precious battery life. Thus, in order to adapt the lamp to its new purpose, the hacking began.

The first step, as is often the case, was to open the case and look inside. Initial inspection revealed a BISS0001 chip - a simple passive infrared motion sensor. There is a function built into the chip that can disable the output from triggering when light is detected. Adding a light-dependent resistor and another 100K resistor was necessary to enable this feature.

Now, the lamp turns on only when it detects motion at night. A few further changes also cut down on the current limit for the LEDs, reducing the brightness to a level more appropriate for nighttime lighting. [Andrew] He now has a useful night light that suits his needs, and likes it so much that he once again set off on vacation to cover 150 miles. That dedication!
