On June 22, Microsoft announced that Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) version 2 can now run on Windows Server 2022. A month ago, Microsoft allowed early testers to try out the feature via GitHub, but with the release of the KB5014678 update patch, all Windows Server 2022 users have gotten the feature.

If users still need to update their systems to get WSL2 support in Windows Server installations, just click Check for Updates and make sure the KB5014678 patch is installed. After downloading and installing the patch, users can install and use WSL.

To start using WSL, users simply open PowerShell with administrator privileges and type:

wsl --install

If users need more help with installation, Microsoft hasspecial documentation page, which also provides more getting started links. If you have any technical questions, you can go to WSL GitHub Report.

Using WSL2,Microsoft started shipping the full Linux kernel with Windows for full system call compatibility. In addition, the performance of the Linux distribution is significantly better than the distribution based on the original version of WSL. Linux now runs in a virtual machine (VM), but it was designed to be a more lightweight and native experience than a traditional VM.
