#visual #analytics technology will be a huge boon to upstream operators seeking eyes-on supervision of assets on a continuous basis. I set out the power of this solution in my latest book, ‘Carbon, Capital, and the Cloud’. Enjoy the little video!

“Machine interpretation of visual data is very mature. Airlines rely on machine readable luggage tags to route passengers’ belongings through the maze of conveyor belts that connect baggage to flights. Modern cash registers scan retail tags and figure out what is being purchased, its weight, its price, and any applicable discounts. Even a smartphone can instantly recognize QR codes and act.
These examples all rely on some kind of human-invented specialized symbology—barcodes, bag tags, and QR codes. That’s useful but also limiting in situations where there is no practical way to use these symbols.
It should be no surprise that visual data capture and interpretation systems are evolving rapidly to create a clever new category of analytics that works with visual data. In oil and gas, these systems can be “taught” to recognize virtually anything, from intruders at the gate to contractors on the site or wildlife at the fence, even the presence or absence of required safety gear.”
