Spain plans to more strictly regulate the use of random in-game purchases or loot boxes, and ban minors entirely.
It looks like minors in Spain will soon no longer be able to purchase random in-game purchases or loot boxes. A new government draft aims to ban players under the age of 18 across the board and bring more regulation to the overall mechanics.
The draft states that games that rely on a naming mechanism will be obligated to disclose this in the future. Self-exclusion mechanisms and spending limit settings also need to be provided. Violations of the guidelines can result in fines ranging from 25,000 to 100,000 euros.
Additionally, in-game ads must not encourage the use of mechanics. While such games can still be advertised in magazines, websites and video game channels, TV commercials are only allowed between 1am and 5am.
While adult players can continue to access loot boxes and random in-game purchases after identification, and can benefit from the new regulations, minors should be banned entirely.
