GM Advances New Energy Strategy, Delivers Over 7,000 Plug-Ins in U.S. in Q2

IT House reported on July 3 that with the acceleration of GE’s electrification transformation, its Bolt EV/EUV has finally begun to rebound, and the GMC Hummer EV pickup is also developing at full speed.

In the second quarter, GM delivered 582,401 vehicles in the U.S., down 15.4% from a year earlier, but it was the third straight quarter of gains, including 387,582 Chevys and 132,055 GMCs.

The two brands sold a combined 7,217 plug-in electric vehicles (including the BrightDrop Zevo 600) in the U.S., or about 1.2 percent of GM’s total.

Although GM’s electric vehicle sales still fell short of expectations, they have shown signs of rebounding and bucking the trend, so GM also expects them to have a better quarter.

IT House reports that GM plans to increase electric vehicle sales in North America to more than 1 million by the end of 2025.

Electric vehicle deliveries in Q1 2022

As a result, Chevrolet Bolt EV/Bolt EUV (affected by a massive battery recall) began to rebound after production resumed in April, new models in 2023 are also cheaper, and GMC Hummer EV electric pickup sales continue to climb.

  • Chevrolet Bolt EV/Bolt EUV: 6,945 (down 38 percent from 11,263)

  • GMC Hummer EV pickup: 272 (new record)

  • Total 7,217 (down 36%), or 1.2% of GM sales

  • (Not including an undisclosed amount of BrightDrop EV)

GM also said that production of the Cadillac Lyriq is accelerating (starting in March) and that “initial deliveries are underway.” In the second half of 2022, this number will continue to grow.

Ultium Cells (a joint venture with LG Energy Solutions) is also a positive sign. “Starting battery production in Ohio to support expansion of electric vehicle manufacturing starting in August”.

That means GM will soon have plenty of Ultium batteries to power the launch of new Ultium-based electric vehicles, including the GMC Hummer EV pickup, the Cadillac Lyriq and the BrightDrop Zevo 600.
