Graphics cards are getting more and more powerful. This also has its price, not only at the time of purchase. You also have to dig deep into your wallet in the long run.
AMD Senior Vice President Sam Naffziger dialogue with Tom’s hardware. Those who have paid attention to the development of graphics cards in recent years should have noticed the rising prices. That alone should be a major annoyance for anyone with a gaming PC. In addition, power consumption also increases because increased performance requires more energy logically.
AMD and NVIDIA: Power consumption up to 600 watts?
According to Naffziger, this is due to the manufacturing process of the graphics chip. Overall, this is not efficient enough and is delaying the switch to better methods. In the recent past, competition from NVIDIA in particular has embraced a dramatic increase in power consumption in order to be able to deliver good performance.
AMD may soon follow suit to stay competitive. However, Naffziger promises they won’t screw up the power consumption as much as elsewhere, as they’ll achieve higher performance per watt.
Nonetheless: graphics cards from NVIDIA and AMD will reportedly be available soon, and according to initial rumors, they will draw 450 watts, and possibly even 600 watts.
