Amazon shows off the first fully autonomous warehouse robot

Amazon showed off Proteus, the storage robot — the company's first fully autonomous variant designed to work side-by-side with humans.

Warehouse automation has been one of the secrets to the success of e-commerce giant Amazon. Now, the company has taken the technology to the next level with the introduction of Proteus, the first fully autonomous storage robot. It was first shown at Amazon's annual Re: Mars conference in Las Vegas this week.

Proteus is similar in appearance to a robot vacuum, but is larger and more powerful. It's designed to move shopping carts around Amazon warehouses and can do it side-by-side with people. Until now, robots have needed to be separated from the surfaces on which humans work.
