AirTag shipments continue to grow since launch

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is back with another prediction, this time about Apple's tracker AirTag. While the company hasn't provided much information about the product since it launched a year ago, shipments have been gradually ramping up, and a second-generation item tracker could eventually be launched, he said.

As shared by Guo post on twitter, the delivery of AirTag is expected to be about 20 million and 35 million in 2021 and 2022, respectively. He says:

AirTag, which has received little attention, has seen a gradual increase in shipments since its release. AirTag shipments are expected to be around 20 million and 35 million units in 2021 and 2022, respectively. If AirTag shipments continue to grow, I believe Apple will develop a second generation.

With that in mind, we might finally see a second-gen announcement. While AirTag is designed to help users track keys, headphones, backpacks, luggage, and more, AirTag shares stories of people using the product to track and rob others.

Since the original AirTag was released a year ago, Apple has made several improvements through firmware updates to address these issues. Now, if the item tracker is far from the original owner, it beeps faster and even notifies people who may have an AirTag that doesn't belong to them.

Apple even launched an Android app to help smartphone users find out who has an AirTag and teach them how to turn it off.

As for the second generation, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo didn't elaborate on what Apple might have in store. Personally, all four of my AirTags batteries are fine, despite being over a year old. I'm guessing that with the new model, Apple might try to be more open, offer anti-tracking features, louder speakers, and, who knows, redesign it so it can be added to personal accessories without the need for additional accessories.

Do you think Apple will be able to release the second generation of this product? What would you like to see on AirTag 2?
